The public final_login_ajax_action handler resolves a user and issues an authenticated session by matching the wp_sslcare_otp table on only the attacker-supplied phone and cap_data, without verifying the SMS OTP or any server-side single-use state. Because cap_data was chosen by the attacker in the public otp_login_ajax_action step (which stores the row before sending the SMS), the finalize step trivially matches and the user is looked up solely by the sslcare_login_phone meta. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers who know a phone-linked user's number to take over that account.","score":8.1,"severity":"high","published":"2026-10-29T03:39:15.430Z","modified":"2026-10-29T10:45:42.545Z","withdrawn":false,"knownExploited":false,"affected":[],"products":[{"vendor":"sslplugins","name":"SSL Wireless SMS Notification","platforms":[],"versions":[{"version":"0","status":"affected","lessThanOrEqual":"3.8.1","versionType":"semver"}],"defaultStatus":"unaffected","cpes":[],"source":"Wordfence","url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-96228"}],"remediation":[],"references":["https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/8e4947d5-91f3-4b36-b309-7c52c483be3d?source=cve","https://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/ssl-wireless-sms-notification/tags/3.8.1/sslWireless.php","https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/wordpress-plugins/ssl-wireless-sms-notification/ssl-wireless-sms-notification-360-unauthenticated-privilege-escalation"],"sources":[{"name":"CVE","id":"CVE-2026-96228","modified":"2026-10-29T10:45:42.545Z","url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-96228"}],"assessments":[{"source":"Wordfence","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":8.1}],"sourceAffected":[],"observedAt":"2026-10-29T14:49:07.749Z","kev":{"status":"not-listed","checkedAt":"2026-10-31T09:35:34.504Z"},"coverage":[{"source":"NVD","status":"available","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.475Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.475Z"},{"source":"GHSA","status":"no-result","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.471Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.471Z"},{"source":"EUVD","status":"available","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:34.485Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:34.485Z"},{"source":"EPSS","status":"no-result","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.475Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.475Z"}],"evidence":[{"source":"NVD","id":"CVE-2026-96228","url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-96228","modified":"2026-10-29T04:18:45.110","score":8.1,"vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:33.475Z"},{"source":"ENISA EUVD","id":"EUVD-2026-112590","url":"https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/EUVD-2026-112590","modified":"Oct 29, 2026, 3:39:15 AM","score":8.1,"vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T05:25:34.485Z"}],"aiSummary":{"text":"SSL Wireless SMS Notification for WordPress versions up to 3.8.1 have an authentication bypass weakness, allowing unauthenticated attackers with knowledge of a user's phone number to take over the account.
