From 2.1.0 until 3.13.0, the Botan C API function botan_block_cipher_block_size converted a size_t block size to int without a bounds check. In an application that accepts external algorithm parameter strings and uses the FFI raw ECB mode, an attacker can select the variable-block-size Lion cipher so that the reported size is truncated, the caller allocates insufficient memory, and later block processing causes memory corruption. The C++ API and normally used C API modes such as CBC and CTR are unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 3.13.0.","score":9.2,"severity":"critical","published":"2026-10-29T17:22:07.316Z","modified":"2026-10-29T20:21:04.235Z","withdrawn":false,"knownExploited":false,"affected":[],"products":[{"vendor":"randombit","name":"botan","platforms":[],"versions":[{"version":">= 2.1.0, < 3.13.0","status":"affected"}],"cpes":[],"source":"GitHub_M","url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-118769"}],"remediation":[],"references":["https://github.com/randombit/botan/security/advisories/GHSA-c68p-822g-jfvr","https://github.com/randombit/botan/pull/5805","https://github.com/randombit/botan/commit/c6089ab7fab616517d56c447c93e13a5c57a0af3"],"sources":[{"name":"CVE","id":"CVE-2026-118769","modified":"2026-10-29T20:21:04.235Z","url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2026-118769"}],"assessments":[{"source":"GitHub_M","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","score":9.2}],"sourceAffected":[],"observedAt":"2026-10-29T21:08:07.870Z","kev":{"status":"not-listed","checkedAt":"2026-10-31T10:00:31.629Z"},"coverage":[{"source":"NVD","status":"available","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.270Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.270Z"},{"source":"GHSA","status":"no-result","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.689Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.689Z"},{"source":"EUVD","status":"available","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.270Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.270Z"},{"source":"EPSS","status":"no-result","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:35.350Z","attemptedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:35.350Z"}],"evidence":[{"source":"ENISA EUVD","id":"EUVD-2026-113278","url":"https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/EUVD-2026-113278","modified":"Oct 29, 2026, 5:22:07 PM","score":9.2,"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.270Z"},{"source":"NVD","id":"CVE-2026-118769","url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-118769","modified":"2026-10-29T18:17:29.180","score":9.2,"vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:X/CR:X/IR:X/AR:X/MAV:X/MAC:X/MAT:X/MPR:X/MUI:X/MVC:X/MVI:X/MVA:X/MSC:X/MSI:X/MSA:X/S:X/AU:X/R:X/V:X/RE:X/U:X","checkedAt":"2026-10-29T18:35:36.270Z"}],"aiSummary":{"text":"Botan, a C++ cryptography library, has an integer overflow vulnerability in its C API function botan_block_cipher_block_size, affecting versions 2.1.0 to 3.13.0.
